Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) was implemented in 2010 to provide a national curriculum for children from nursery to secondary school. The curriculum is designed to equip children with the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to succeed in life. It comprises of a broad general education up to the end of S3 (third year in secondary) followed by a senior phase of learning from S4 to S6.
All children and young people in Scotland are entitled to experience a coherent curriculum from 3 to 18, in order that they have opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to succeed. Curriculum is defined as the totality of all that is planned for children and young people from early learning and childcare, through school and beyond. That totality can be planned for and experienced by learners across four contexts.
Scotland's Curriculum for Excellence is an ambitious and comprehensive approach to education that aims to provide a broad and flexible curriculum for all children and young people. The focus on inter-disciplinary learning, personal achievement, and developing key attributes will equip young people with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in today's rapidly changing world.
